Put my generator back together last night and it fired right up.  Still dont like the voltage-at-idle but I'm shooting that.

Meanwhile, I noticed that there is arcing across one of the sets of points.  I ran a file over them but it didnt clear it up.  Whats this a sign of?  Flakey Condensor????  Where is that sucker, behind the backing plate?

Also if I put in a new set of points how do you break the bolt that holds the backing plate to the generator shaft?  And is it reverse threads?

Thanks
Ed

R5/DS7 condensers are located on the side of the stator (remove the right side engine cover) and you'll see them. What bolt are you talking about?  The points cam/rotor bolt? Nothing is left handed thread on the ignition system.

Yea the rotor bolt.  How do you crack it to replace the points?

I would assume points can be replaced without removing this bolt

Ed, you need to throw that pre historic shit in the can. You'll put disc brakes on a 65 mustang and still run points on yer 71R5..?   Get one of Nicks Iggys and be done with it. You just re did the charging system it is the next correct step to a trouble free R5. You can install it faster than you can eat lunch, tell him to hold the shipping and you and the Ms. take the Stang out to pick it up.

Also, arcing is caused/enhanced by another issue, oil that has migrated between both the points plates to stator plates/stator, and points to points plates.

As far as condensers go, they don't have to be mounted on the stator, Honda mounted the condensers on the frame on most of their models for many years, right next to the coils.

Well, since I can't go for Nicks ignition just yet (the Mustang needs a refurb carb - $600 for the part!) I ordered a points and condensor set last night.

I'l know soon enough if its the condensor.  I'll wash the whole thing with brake cleaner too but I dont think theres too much (obvious) oil in there.

Last time I looked though I thought I had to pull off the cam bolt.  Beleive it or not I have never had the points out in the 4 years I've owned it.  So mkane63t is saying he doesnt think that bolt has to come off?  If I just unscrew the points I am good?  It didnt look like when I have timed it, that but let someone whos done it chime in...

Thanks
Ed

That's true, but on Ed's bike, they ARE mounted on the side of the stator (he was asking where they were).

Ed- you do NOT remove the points cam and bolt to replace the points...it needs to be there so you can set the gap on each set before setting the timing. Remove the points from the plates (leave the plates on the stator ! ) Unless you find an NOS set of factory points, replacement points do not even come with the plates. Use Daichi points/condensers when possible.

I'll be using whatever brand HVC's "20-6844" kit comes with!
