Well, I called first & he told me not to come by...too busy today. So, after a 20 minute phone conversation I went to the pool.

I started w/M&G on my F1's and it didn't work too well here in SF (coastal, moist weather). I went w/ceramic coating and if I had to do it over again I would go nickel. Or, better yet get 'em made in stainless steel.

Dam SFO423, I was almost sold on the mop & glop. Even Gary said it gives good results. Going to do a bit more research before I decide. I like Chrome, but the unfinished look definitely gives that factory GP look. Don't think He'll do it but I am going to ask Gary if he'll stainless. I'll keep you'all posted.

. Stainless looks great, but you do need to change some dimensions due to the thermal properties of SS vs. Carbon steel. Some claim that on a short race track the Carbon Steel pipes will be faster because they allow the temperature of the exhaust gasses in the pipe to change faster. I Dunno . Thermal conductivity = K = (W/M^2/M/degree K) For Stainless, K = ~16 For carbon steel, K = ~50 . That said, I like my Stainless (304) pipes. Too bad I used stamped steel headers, I had to paint them black ![]() Dave |

Just keep in mind if you nickle or chrome the pipes, you'll have to polish them and smooth some welds. You'll also need to reduce the diameter .020 (outside pipe, inside manifold) to accommodate the extra material.
I would do ceramic powder if you can. |

Gary also told me pipe differences are minor. A reputible[?] pipe builder I know says not to ceramic coat 2 stroke pipes-says they won't make heat as they should [I dunno]

I question his reputation, because reality is when you ceramic coat a pipe they build/hold more heat in them and they make a bit more power.

Heat fluctuation is less with a stainless steel pipe as Yote noted. Therefore if they are built correctly, will make more power regardless of the track length.
Building more heat is not important. What is important, is to know the temp the pipe will perform best at. Then adjust the pipe length to keep it as close to that temp as possible from the start of a longest straight away, to the end of that straight. The stainless pipes get the advantage over carbon steel because of the ability to have a smaller window around that number. |

I use m&g on mine and it works pretty well, it can scrape easily, so be careful handling them.
Use a smooth cotton t-shirt to apply or you might get fish eyes when it cures. A sponge will be too streaky i think. I've also seen this stuff by VHT-SP115. Supposed to be a 1500 degree clear coat. Anyone got any experience w/ this stuff? The spec II pipes fit bolted right up w/ NO problems. They perform really well and I agree, there wouldn't be much difference in performance over the F1...you save 100 bucks with the classics (the skinny stinger you see when you remove the silencer core.... Ron (RB Designs) checked his porting specs with Gary and Gary said that they would work w/ his pipes. you always want to match the engine to the pipes for best performance (from what I've read)...head mods, porting and squish were all ok.\ While we are on the performance subject, what's the best packing to use when repacking the stinger end? |
